‘GOIN BACK TO HONOLULU… 

Okay, Kid Cudi actually grew up in Ohio, but his music definitely takes you back to the wild summer energies of “Maui Wowie.” He first began rapping in 2003, and moved to New York — determined to pursue music as a career. Leaving Cleveland in 2005 with only $500 in his pocket and a demo tape, it truly was a brave step for the man who’d later receive two Grammys and several nominations for BET Hip Hop Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and even more for his work as an actor too. 

As “Day 'n' Nite” started making rounds on MySpace back in ‘07, it marked the start of a legendary journey through music. Bumping into Kanye West as he worked various jobs, and later becoming under his care as a mentor, he was destined to make it big in the scene.

In an interview with Rolling Stone following the release of his debut mixtape to streaming platforms, “It’s a celebration for what me, Plain Pat, Emile, and Dot Da Genius created early on,” Kid Cudi shared.

“We set out to do something important. We wanted to change the game. We wanted to change how people approach making music. And we did that.”

Heck yeah, they did. Along the way, he’s shaken up the scene, experienced growth, learned a lot, and revolutionized his sound. “I never imagined I would have this many albums. So right now I feel extremely blessed to be able to do what I’m doing at this stage in my career,” he told Rolling Stone as he gears for another album release.

“It’s one of those things where I’ve been able to grow with the times, but, still remain myself.”
